Youth, Skills & Employment
THE THESIS
Africa has the world's youngest population and its longest queue for a first job. More than 10 million young Africans enter the labour market every year; the continent creates about 3 million formal jobs. Nine in ten employed young Africans work informally, a fifth of the region's young people are in neither work nor school, and fewer than 6% of secondary students learn a trade. The AU adopted a Youth Charter in 2006 and a vocational strategy in 2007. The AR gives the demographic bulge a Youth Service, a skills academy in every province, a first-job guarantee and a seat at the table.
