The Peace and Security Catastrophe
THE PEACE AND SECURITY CATASTROPHE IN NUMBERS
23,968 terrorism-related fatalities in Africa in 2025 — 24% increase, highest ever on record · 167M Africans facing acute food insecurity in 2025, directly driven by conflict · 40M+ people forcibly displaced in Africa as of 2025 · 950K km² of African territory outside government control due to jihadist insurgency — larger than Egypt.
Africa is the most conflict-affected continent on Earth. Sudan is experiencing the worst famine since 1984–85. M23, backed by Rwanda with 3,000–4,000 Rwandan troops, captured Goma and Bukavu in early 2025, killing thousands of civilians. Terrorism-related deaths reached 23,968 in 2025 — the highest ever recorded on the continent. The AU's Peace and Security Council has been described by the International Crisis Group in February 2026 as 'arguably at its weakest since it was inaugurated.' This is not a crisis. This is a system failure.
